OTOPLASTY 

The correction of protruding ears requires a surgery called “otoplasty”, which corrects abnormalities of the pinna. Otoplasty surgery for nice protruding ears

What are the objectives of the surgery for protruding ears ?

The aspect of the detached ear is linked to different deformations of the auricle, classified in 3 types, which in some cases can be associated:

  • Antelix plicature defect, most frequently resulting in excessive helix projection.
  • Enlarged concha
  • The detachment of the pavilion from the skull (Helix Valgus)
  • The objective of ototplasty is to determine which of these deformities are present and to correct them surgically, effectively and permanently, by concealing the scars.

THE OPERATION

General anaesthesia in children from 7 years of age. Local anaesthesia with sedation in adults

Duration of intervention:

40 to 60 minutes

Duration of hospitalization:

Outpatient hospitalisation, discharge the same evening after the operation.

Conventional otoplasty usually involves..:

A plasty of the anthelix, combining a weakening of its anterior face and a plicature maintained by deep stitches; A burying of the concha, allowing to bring the auricle back in a good position in relation to the skull.

The earlobe is also plastyed to reposition it.

The scars are positioned precisely behind the ear, in the fold, so as to hide them. The sutures used for the skin sutures are absorbable, and “fall off” in less than 21 days, without the need to remove them.

Dressing

  • A bandage around the head is worn for 48 hours, then replaced by a light dressing.
  • A support bandage will be worn for 2 to 3 weeks night and day, and then for 3 weeks to protect the sutures made during the otoplasty.

Follow-up and results

  • The dressings will be renewed every 2 days by a nurse until complete healing (about 15 days).
  • A prescription will be given to you when you leave the clinic.
  • A consultation appointment for control will be scheduled 7 days after the operation.
  • The results of the otoplasty are visible immediately after the operation.
  • However, the final result will be evaluated after 1 to 2 months (melting of the post-operative edema and disappearance of bruises).
